How to sew a swimsuit with your own hands - the choice of fabric, patterns, a guide for beginners, stylish photo ideas

Every girl wants to look attractive at the beach or poolside. It is good if the store models perfectly fit your figure. But what to do if you can't find a ready-made swimsuit? That's right, you need to sew it yourself. Especially if you have a sewing machine and free time, it will not be too difficult.

Fabric

As a swimsuit requires a long stay of its owner in the water and in the bright sun, the fabric should be stretch well, not to burn, absorb water badly and dry quickly.

Most often in the stores there are biflex swimwear. This is a knitted material, which is made from artificial fibers. If you can not find biflex in a fabric store, for sewing a swimsuit will do:

  • Microfiber. The fabric is soft to the touch, breathes, but quickly stretches under the influence of water;
  • Tactel. The new fabric easily withstands water and sun exposure, dries quickly, comes in glossy and matte;
  • Nylon. Good for corrective leotards and if you wonder how to sew a leotard for rhythmic gymnastics. The material deteriorates from prolonged exposure to the sun;
  • Polyamide. Also tightens the figure and is often used in sports leotards. Dries well, does not deform over time.

Consumables

Before sewing a swimsuit with your own hands, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Fine needles, preferably special needles for delicate fabrics;
  • Thread in tone with fabric for sewing and contrasting for the planned stitches;
  • Measuring tape and ruler;
  • Scissors. It is very important that they be very sharp. Dull cloths can leave puffs on thin faux fabric;
  • Rings
  • Prefabricated bodice cups or bones
  • Straps
  • Strap adjusters
  • Linen clasps.

Measuring

Measuring yourself or another girl should be done while wearing underwear. So that the swimsuit does not hang on the figure, a piece of fabric should be measured in length when it is calm and when it is strongly stretched.

The results obtained should be converted into percentages and multiply each measurement by this coefficient. To build a swimsuit pattern, you need to measure the following parameters:

  • Saddle depth (distance from the top of the panties to the bottom of the groin);
  • Hip circumference;
  • Waist circumference;
  • Cup height;
  • Bust width;
  • Breast Girth;
  • The circumference under the breasts.

One-piece swimsuit pattern

To make the process of building a one-piece swimsuit easier, find a ready-made pattern for a fitted strappy dress. Copy the top of the pattern to the waistline. Next, draw a "saddle depth" line down the center from the waist and determine the width of the gusset.

By constructing an inverted "T", determine the height of the swimsuit neckline. It is better to copy it from the well-fitting panties. You can even bring them to the paper and trace around the contour. Note that the cut on the front of the swimsuit is always larger than the hip cut on the back.

If you do not know how to cut and sew a swimsuit with your own hands, buy or find a free swimsuit pattern on the internet.

Swimsuit pattern

Separate swimsuits such as "bikini" are most popular among girls with a good figure. The upper part of the swimsuit can be with a classic bodice or bandeau type, without straps.

Construction of a pattern for a two-piece swimsuit is a difficult task for beginner sewers. That is why it is better to use a ready-made pattern of the product of a suitable design.

Swimsuit for lush ladies

If everything is clear with the swimsuits of standard sizes, it is enough to find a swimsuit model of your size, then finding a beautiful swimsuit of large size is sometimes a great difficulty. Therefore, it is worth thinking about sewing a swimsuit with your own hands.

It is better to choose the fabric for such a swimsuit from fabrics with a shrinking effect. Also look good panties with an inflated waist, which make the figure more proportional. Wide straps will better support the top of the swimsuit. When sewing a large size swimsuit, you should follow a few rules:

  • To make the top of a two-piece swimsuit look more interesting, gather the fabric between the cups in decorative pleats;
  • To prevent the straps from cutting into shoulders, and to make the swimsuit look proportionally, make them wide enough;
  • When sewing the panties, leave at least three centimeters for the elastic insertion;
  • Do not tuck the leg slits, otherwise they will rub on the full thighs;

Push-up with your own hands

Push-up inserts help make your breasts visually larger and fuller. Such an insert is useful for girls with small breasts or young mothers after breastfeeding. To add a special petal of foam in your swimsuit, you need to insert it between the lining and the front fabric, as in a pocket, then sew the side seam.

In order to make your breasts look natural, choose an insert that matches your breast size.

Cut

When the pattern is ready and cut, you can transfer it to the fabric. The fabric is spread out on the table and the pattern is pinned to the double folded fabric with tailor pins. The pattern should be circled with a piece of soap or chalk. The fabric must be in an unstretched state, as the stretch factor is already included in the calculations. Next, the pattern can be cut out.

How to change the size of the swimsuit

If a girl has gained a lot of weight or, conversely, has lost weight, it is not necessary to discard your favorite swimsuit. It can always be embroidered or reduced by your own efforts.

If a one-piece leotard should be increased, it is stripped at the side seams. Between the parts of the front and back stitched inserts of matching fabric, mesh or lace.

If you need to increase a two-piece swimsuit, the top and bottom are rasped on the side seams and between the parts is also inserted fabric or ties of elastic fabric.

If the swimsuit needs to be stitched, the side seams are cut, the excess is cut off and stitched again.

Swimsuit from an old T-shirt

To create an exclusive bathing suit you do not need not only expensive fabric and accessories, but also new fabric at all. Even more, for sewing some models do not even need a sewing machine. For example, you can sew a swimsuit from an old T-shirt by hand. It is necessary to act in the following sequence:

  • Wash, iron and lay the T-shirt on a table, do not unseam the seams;
  • To folded in half T-shirt attached and handy panties, taking into account the allowances;
  • To the upper half attached to the bodice, circled one cup and fit into a triangle;
  • Next, with sharp scissors cut two blanks for panties and two for the bodice;
  • Tie for the top, which encircles the chest, is made from the bottom hem of the T-shirt;
  • The rest of the ties are made from strips of fabric woven into plaits;
  • All parts are sewn by hand or on a sewing machine.

A new piece from an old bathing suit

If you have a closed swimsuit that is already boring or out of fashion, do not throw it away. On its basis, you can sew a fashionable swimsuit "trikini".

Perform the following steps:

  • Stretch out the old swimsuit a lot, using a chair or a large box;
  • Use chalk or dry soap to draw an hourglass, marking the cutouts on the sides;
  • Cut out the resulting ovals, with the front additionally cut across about the middle;
  • Connect the upper and lower part of the front decorative ring;
  • All slices should be bent and sewn with a zigzag stitch.

How to update an outdated leotard

In order to update an old but quality swimsuit, you can use several design techniques:

  • Add decorative cutouts to your swimsuit. The edges can be sewn or treated with colorless varnish;
  • Sew fringes on top of the leotard. It can be in a tone of thing or contrasting colors, choose any length;
  • Color a one-color swimsuit with water-resistant markers. To do this, color a simple pencil drawing;
  • Paint the leotard with guipure, rhinestones, ruffles;
  • Glue a waterproof thermal sticker.

Sewing a new leotard can take some time, but ready-made patterns will greatly simplify the process, and remaking existing swimwear and can be called more fun. However, all difficulties justify the exclusive design of your swimsuit and a perfect fit, which no bathing suit will be able to provide.
