How to Draw a Clock: The Subtleties of Making a Pencil Drawing for Children and Beginners

Clocks are an essential attribute of modern man, endowed with special symbolism. In everyday life they help to orientate in time, to make an order of the day. Artists of different eras depicted the transience of time, using them as a mediator. This article will help beginner artists to comprehend the basics of methods of depicting clocks of various types.

Drawing clocks in pencil

You'll need pictures of clocks of various types for your first try-outs. The sketching method will help the novice artist not to miss details and maintain proportions. The basic and most common types that artists use are:

  • Wristwatches.
  • Pocket.
  • Wall clocks, including cuckoo clocks.
  • Sand-colored.
  • Tower.
  • Sunny.

You can start a drawing with a dial, but you don't have to take it as a rule. Often masters begin the image with outlines, gradually moving on to the details - hands, numbers.

You can create on a sheet of A4 or any other paper of suitable size. Drawing is done with a simple pencil. In the process of an indispensable helper will be eraser, which can easily remove excess material.

Stages of work :

  1. On a sheet of paper, a circle is drawn, which will serve as a sketch of the body.
  2. From there are two parallel straight lines on both sides of the line - a sketch of the strap, bracelet. At this point, you should think about its design, whether it be ornamentation, metal inserts, or a strict pattern.
  3. The glass is added to the circumference of the case - the same circle, with the same center, but with a slightly smaller radius.
  4. In the design of the dial, you can give free rein to your imagination. It is not necessary to recreate all twelve numbers, because many watch manufacturers limit themselves to dashes or dots, leaving the numbers only at twelve, three, six and nine o'clock.
  5. Next you can draw the hands. Their shape can be strictly straight, but you can use patterns on them, for example, elongated rhombuses.
  6. Do not forget about the window with the date, square, rectangular in shape. It is located most often near the three hours, and the winding wheel is depicted on the outer side of the case.
  7. After the main points are completed, the outlines are traced, and superfluous lines are erased with an eraser. Based on the skill of the author, light and shadow are worked out.

It is worth adding that the shape of the wrist accessory can be not only round, it can be oval, rectangular, square. The strap can be narrow, barely reaching half the width of the case, or it can be wider (relevant for designer watches made of leather materials).

How to draw an hourglass

Hourglasses differ from other types in that they are created to measure the interval of time. At the moment they are used as a souvenir and do not always carry a practical use.

To depict them you will need:

  • A simple pencil.
  • Paper.
  • A ruler.
  • Eraser.
  • Colored pencils, paints.

Image process :

  1. To begin, using a ruler, a large rectangle is constructed, elongated in length, after which it is divided strictly into two halves vertically and horizontally.
  2. The top and bottom are depicted two parallel thin rectangles, adjacent to the main large. They act as a frame in the construction. Then they should be connected to each other with lines (crosspieces). On these rectangles the construction will stand alternately.
  3. Now you can draw the vessel, which will be shaped like a figure eight. Its center is narrow, but it is passable for sand.
  4. At this point, should engage in decoration - decorate the columns, making them shaped, add sand, which is transferred from the top of the vessel to the bottom.
  5. The final stage with an eraser removes unnecessary elements, the picture is painted. With proper pencil skills, you can give a three-dimensional picture.

How to draw a sundial

The history of sundials goes back thousands of years, dating back to Ancient Egypt. In total, there are three types of them:

  1. Equatorial, in which the dial is located strictly parallel to the equator. The gnomon (the rod that casts the shadow on the dial) is parallel to the Earth's axis.
  2. Horizontal, with the location of numbers parallel to the horizon and a triangular gnomon.
  3. Vertical, located on the walls of buildings.

The whole principle of this mechanism is built on the change in the angle of illumination of the Earth's surface by the Sun during the day.

In the process of work it is necessary to use the method of sketching; it is a complex picture, requiring deep knowledge in the field of fine arts, namely light and shade, geometry, three-dimensional drawing.

When working, you can use both pencil and paint, having previously made a sketch.

How to Draw a Cuckoo Clock

To create this type of wall clock a simple pencil and a sheet of paper will do. You can perform them in the form of a house, which will give them a peculiar coloring.

Stages of work :

  1. First, a model of the house is drawn. Is depicted a gable roof, walls and floor. The walls can be straight, like in a birdhouse, or they can be divergent from the base to the roof in different directions.
  2. A dial with hands can have different design: from simple plain numbers and hands to various patterns, drawings on its surface. Here, it all depends on the imagination of the master and his skill.
  3. You can draw a stand under the clock or leave it nailed to the wall.
  4. You can decorate the box of the clock itself in any form - in the form of tree bark or simply by adding a pattern.
  5. At the bottom, you can make a weight suspended from a rope or thin chain. As it can be used round metal balls or Christmas tree cones, which depends on the style chosen.
  6. At the top is depicted the main element - a window with a cuckoo. The bird does not have to be drawn in detail, you can make it in a toy style.

By depicting the clock, artists always want to show that time is the most valuable gift, which cannot be bought. It is important to be able to spend it usefully, doing things that are really interesting, not squandering it in vain.
