How to draw a room - dimensions, creating an outline and tips for novice artists

Nowadays of high technology we all have access to professionals of our craft, designers, artists who can make us a design project of our apartment or room. But each of us may have wondered how we can draw a room with furniture with our own hands.

Do we need any professional skills for this, do we need to study this for several years in university or can we do it ourselves in an hour of free time.

In order to draw a room professionally, you need to know the basics of perspective, so in this article, we'll look at how you can quickly draw a three-dimensional room with a few lines.

Of course, it won't be a professional design project with calculated dimensions, with certain building materials highlighted, but it will be the version that you imagine and see in your head.

Drawing a room in direct projection

Before you do the work you have to decide whether it will be a top view or a "straight" view of the room, as if you were standing in it and saw the furniture right in front of your eyes. Let's start with a straight projection, if you were in the room, how you would see it.

What would it take to draw a room?

  • A4 or A3 white paper (at your discretion);
  • A plain H and B pencil (hard and soft);
  • Eraser.
  • Your patience, of course.

Projection step by step

  1. First, you need to mark the horizon line closer to the center of the sheet. It is better to draw on a horizontally placed sheet.
  2. Next, it is necessary to draw the vanishing point. It is located on the horizontal line in any place where the expected corner of the room will be.
  3. Then it is necessary to draw 4 intersecting lines from the corners of the sheet to the vanishing point. Depending on the location of the point, they may intersect each other. These will be auxiliary lines that will help project objects in the room correctly.
  4. Next, use the horizontal and vertical lines to draw the location of the walls and floor in the room. Draw a straight horizontal line across the bottom where you would like the room to end. Also draw vertical lines on the left and right to indicate the walls on the sides. Do the same manipulation with the ceiling above: draw a horizontal line and draw lines on the sides. This is done thanks to the auxiliary lines, we lean on them. In the middle of the sheet you should get a rectangle that marks the wall. Also at the expense of the contours on the sides should also read the walls.

Drawing the details of the room

When you have finished the construction of the room, you need to proceed to the furnishings. Here we are completely guided by our imagination. At this stage, let's figure out how to draw the room design.

The next step will be the window. If you want it to be in the room, of course, or several windows. Draw lines perpendicular to horizontal lines at right angles. Using them schematically draw a rectangle that will mark the window.

Then you can draw in more detail frame and window sill. If you draw the window sill, the side lines marking it should run parallel to the lines that were originally drawn, crossing at the vanishing point. The same technique can be used to draw the windows on the left and right sides. Auxiliary lines should be used so that the perspective of the objects does not change.

You can sketch light fixtures on the ceiling or on the side walls. Then you can outline parquet, linoleum, carpet on the floor, or wallpaper. But everything should be marked with thin lines, so that these details do not overload the drawing and do not attract attention more than the main pieces of furniture.

Placement of furniture depends on the size of the room and depends on the purpose of the room: kitchen, bedroom, hall or nursery. Drawing should be based on the auxiliary lines that were originally drawn. Construct furniture based on the direction of these lines.

For example if it's a bed, it's better to put it in the center or if it's close to some wall. Initially we draw lines of straight construction of the box. Then the bed should be supplemented with additional decorative elements (pillows, plaids).

What is the main rule when drawing a room

It is worth remembering that all elements consist of geometric shapes, so they are created with a pencil and a ruler, and are available to anyone, even someone who can't draw.

The main thing is to rely on auxiliary lines and draw the guide lines of furniture parallel to them, and horizontal lines parallel to the horizon line, then the projection will be preserved perfectly, and all items will look realistic.

Drawing small details

In this way, all the main figures in the room are drawn: sofa, bed, table, closet, bedside table, chair, and so on. After drawing the furniture, the decor - draperies, tablecloths, lamps standing on the nightstands or on the table, flowers, posters on the wall, or paintings - are drawn.

All this is drawn schematically, so there is no need to fixate on the smallest details in this work. After all, it is more geometric drawing than creative. Again, it is worth remembering that it all depends on your imagination and the goals pursued. But of course, if the decor elements play a big role depending on the style of the interior, then you need to pay attention to this.

Based on the above steps, you can understand how to draw a bathroom, it will be smaller and the furniture in it will be peculiar - the bathtub itself, or shower cabin (drawn as geometric shapes, then rounded corners and drawn details), sink, washing machine and so on.

Observing the order of operations can depict any room, to help you can take any images of rooms or furniture. After outlining all the elements of furnishings and decorations, it is necessary to erase all auxiliary lines carefully with an eraser, and highlight the main elements of the drawing with a soft pencil with the designation B.

How to draw a room plan

Perhaps for someone it will be better to see a plan of arrangement of furniture in the top view, or it is required for some specific purposes, for example for the builders who will make repairs. Therefore, briefly consider how you can draw the view from above.

This is done even easier. Than to draw a direct projection of the room. Because just straight geometric shapes are used. First you need to choose the scale of the drawing. For example, 1 cm will be equal to 1 meter. Therefore, if you draw your room, you must first measure the dimensions of the walls, doorways and furniture, and then proceed to work.

Based on these dimensions, draw the walls, the location of the door and window. The room will look on such a plan as an ordinary rectangle or square, schematically you can even outline the width of the walls.

Furniture is also drawn using geometric shapes, the furniture can be schematically highlight elements of the decor, but do not get carried away with this, as the plan is the main size and location of the furniture.

Hopefully, this material will help you to make your dreams come true. The visual design of the dwelling or work area created in the drawing will become a reality.
